These pictures are of our new housing site in Santiago Atitlan. As many of you know we are now building houses for two of the families from Panabaj who lost literally everything in the mudslides of last October. The pile of rocks seen here, have been removed from the pozo that is halfway to being finished. The pozo will be the septic hole for the two families.
When I visited the site two weeks ago, the worker pictured inside the pozo was only about a metre into the ground. With only a shovel and a hammer to break the rocks, he has single handedly dug this huge pit. It is back breaking work, but he always has a smile for me!
The foundations of the pozo have begun as well, and within the next few weeks, the rocks that have been unearthed will have a new function, to line the walls of the pozo.
I return home on August 15 and return again to Guatemala on the 30th of August for another month of work here.
It is our hope that the families will be able to move into their homes by the end of September.
